We can't wait to see you!

Way back in 2010, Rotarians launched Waterdown’s Oh Canada Ribfest as a way for both our local clubs to raise money to support local and international projects – but right out of the gate, it was obvious that it was so much more. It instantly became the official kickoff to summer - for 10 years, it was the place to meet up with old friends, visit with neighbours, dance in the park, and celebrate with our families. And then, along with the rest of the world, our little festival came to a screeching halt.

So, it’s no wonder we’re excited – for the food, the midway, the bands, the fireworks – all of it is back this year, and we cannot wait!

As always, it takes hundreds of volunteers to make Ribfest something special. So, thanks to those who have already signed up for a shift or two – without you, well, it just wouldn’t be the same. For those who haven’t signed up yet, be sure to click the Volunteer Now button on the home page. And if you’re in the park on Friday evening, be sure to stop in and say hi at the beer tent, where I will be serving up beverages.

I’d be lying if I said bringing Ribfest back was easy – we are in a new reality, after all. It is a minor miracle that our steering committee has pulled it all together in a shorter time than normal. Due to the wait to see if pandemic restrictions were going to be fully lifted, we had much less planning time than in the past. And we are in a new economic climate that has impacted local businesses. Even so, we once again received terrific support from our sponsors – and for that we are grateful.

Remember, admission to Ribfest is free. You will see Rotarians in the park all weekend and they will be taking donations – this is totally optional. All proceeds go to the work our clubs do, from running Rotary Garden Court seniors apartments, overseeing the local the Food 4 Kids program and awarding student bursaries to running exchange programs, supporting polio eradication around the world and much, much more. So when you see a volunteer in a blue Rotary shirt, be sure to chat with them. They will be happy to tell you what Rotary does, and why they are so passionate about it.

But most of all, come out this Canada Day weekend, let your hair down, and just have fun. We deserve it.
