Ribfest wants YOU

I have been a huge fan of Waterdown's Oh Canada Ribfest since it launched in Memorial Park some 9 years ago. I have enjoyed the bands, the food and the fireworks, and I even recall taking part in a huge group singalong of BTO's Takin' Care of Business on the ball diamond. Invariably, I run into neighbours and friends and have a great time catching up with people I rarely see at any other time.

This Canada Day, weekend, I will get to experience Ribfest (which kicks off in just about 48 hours from now) from a new perspective: Rotary volunteer. That means I will be donning a "Volunteer" t-shirt and tackling a variety of tasks each day of the festival: I will be greeting guests at the gate, selling 50/50 tickets and serving in the beer tent. I will also be helping with set up on Friday afternoon, and taking on any role as yet to be assigned.

It sounds like a lot of work - and I am excited about it all. Ribfest is a huge community event and it is the biggest fundraiser of the year for Waterdown's two Rotary Clubs, enabling them to provide meaningful support to a host of programs, both local and international. Immediate visible examples that come to mind are the Memorial Park ice loop, Food 4 Kids and the Youth Exchange.

And guess what? Community members can still get in on the fun of giving back. There are slots open on the volunteer roster, and I can guarantee anyone who wants to pitch in will be welcomed with open arms.

Even if you aren't able to volunteer your time, be sure to come by for some ribs. It's a delicious way to make a difference in the lives of others. And be sure to stop by and say hi - I'll be the one in the blue t-shirt!
